Description

Fragment of a mantle or shroud. Rectangular in shape with right side of textile loosely stitched to rest of fragment. Vertical stripe pattern across surface, with groupings of stripes and large plain bands in between. Stripe groupings done in blue, light blue, dark brown-red, white and brown. Plain bands done in beige and brown. Three tiered border along top edge. Textile stitched to cream coloured fabric, secured to off-white matboard.

Narrative

Collected in Peru before the 1970s by Ina VanStan, a Professor of Textiles and Clothing at the Florida State College for Women (Florida State University) from the 1940s to c. 1966. VanStan later gifted her collection to the donor. A large amount of the donation was used for teaching at the University of Alberta while others were mainly small study fragments.
