Irregularly shaped fragment of a border from a triangular head cloth. Left edge of textile is diagonal, right edge is straight. Main body of fragment is a golden brown band trimmed with red on its top and bottom edges. Dark yellow geometric and curvilinear designs throughout band. Alternating red and pink tabs, with vertical stripe and bird designs, extend from bottom edge. Sections of light brown attached to the top edge are remnants of the head cloth. Textile stitched to cream coloured fabric, secured to off-white matboard.
Possibly from a Chancay or Ychsma (Ishma) textile.
Main body of textile done in complementary warp weave. Reinserted cotton warps in the tabs along bottom edge. Fragments of the head cloth along the top edge done in plain weave. Border and birds designs made of camelid wool, head cloth fragment made of cotton.
Collected in Peru before the 1970s by Ina VanStan, a Professor of Textiles and Clothing at the Florida State College for Women (Florida State University) from the 1940s to c. 1966. VanStan later gifted her collection to the donor. A large amount of the donation was used for teaching at the University of Alberta while others were mainly small study fragments.
