Description

Fragment of a cloth. Irregularly shaped with worn top edge, diagonal right and bottom edges, and straight left edge. Textile background is white with designs throughout done in dark brown. Top two-thirds of textile have a step pattern. Checkered pattern across entire bottom third of textile. Step motifs, with horizontal lines, inside each square.

History Of Use

Fragment was likely from a carrying cloth for pack animals.

Double cloth done in plain weave.

Narrative

Collected in Peru before the 1970s by Ina VanStan, a Professor of Textiles and Clothing at the Florida State College for Women (Florida State University) from the 1940s to c. 1966. VanStan later gifted her collection to the donor. A large amount of the donation was used for teaching at the University of Alberta while others were mainly small study fragments.
