Description

Fragment of a sling. Cradle is light yellow-brown with a repeating pattern of a bird profile, on a plain background, done in geometric style. Pattern alternates between dark brown and light purple. Sides where the cradle meets the handles are bordered with thin light purple stripes and one thick dark brown band. Handles are tightly woven braids, done in light brown with dark brown diamond patterns. Ends of both handles are missing.

Narrative

Collected in Peru before the 1970s by Ina VanStan, a Professor of Textiles and Clothing at the Florida State College for Women (Florida State University) from the 1940s to c. 1966. VanStan later gifted her collection to the donor. A large amount of the donation was used for teaching at the University of Alberta while others were mainly small study fragments.
