Description

Strapless bag. Rectangular in shape, gradually widening at the bottom. Body is light brown-white with black and red-brown striped border close to opening. Upper third is plain and bottom portion, trimmed with thicker black and brown stripes, is covered in brocade pattern of birds, zoomorphic figures and waves. Designs done in black and red-brown. Bottom edge bordered with wide black and brown stripes. Right and bottom sides stitched closed, left side folded closed.

History Of Use

Bag was remade from a larger garment. Lower edge border was possibly from the original garment.

Specific Techniques

Main body done in plain weave. Designs on lower portion done with supplementary weft (brocade). Border of lower edge done in cross-knit loop embroidery. Overall, the bag is done in the Central Coast style.

Narrative

Collected in Peru before the 1970s by Ina VanStan, a Professor of Textiles and Clothing at the Florida State College for Women (Florida State University) from the 1940s to c. 1966. VanStan later gifted her collection to the donor. A large amount of the donation was used for teaching at the University of Alberta while others were mainly small study fragments.
