Description

Fragment of a coarse cloth. Irregularly shaped with rectangular main body and fraying triangles extending from the left and right sides.
Main body rectangle coloured white, trimmed in brown, with interior designs of stepped pyramids, zigzags and diamonds. Patterns done in light and dark brown. Frayed attachments on the left and right sides of the rectangle are patterned with alternating white and brown yarns, creating a small checkered design.

History Of Use

Fragment was likely from a carrying cloth for pack animals.

Specific Techniques

Done in plain weave with alternating yarns. Main body made up of double cloth.

Narrative

Collected in Peru before the 1970s by Ina VanStan, a Professor of Textiles and Clothing at the Florida State College for Women (Florida State University) from the 1940s to c. 1966. VanStan later gifted her collection to the donor. A large amount of the donation was used for teaching at the University of Alberta while others were mainly small study fragments.
