Description
Ceramic vessel with a dark red surface that is heavily decorated with incised designs. The body is spherical, with two small decorative handles on opposite sides. The incised designs repeat within horizontal bands around the vessel. There are three raised bands above the foot, one at the shoulder, and another at the lip. The neck is long, flaring out to a circular mouth. The base rounded with a raised foot.
History Of Use
Water jar. Often part of a marriage dowry and placed for display in domestic compounds. Vessels like this are also gifted to a mother shortly after the birth of her child, as a congratulatory gift.
Specific Techniques
To make these ceramics, they are mounted on a concave mould and placed on a spinner. The patterns on the pot are made with a metal comb and wooden sticks.
