Mask Item Number: 3420/19 from the MOA: University of British Columbia
Mask carved from wood. The face is sunken, with a raised nose ridge down the centre of the face. There are two small rectangular cutouts for eyes. High on either side of the head are two long appendages. A long beak-like structure extends from the forehead, and again up from the centre of the head. There are areas where pigment is still visible.
Animal masks were carved by the Dogon to receive the spiritual energy of animals after death.
