Description

Wooden painted mask of the character Garuda. Dark green bird-like face with bulging eyes, pointed beak and four fang-like teeth. Light blue and black scalloped headdress on top of mask. Central scallop is red and has three triangular protrusions in front of it, overtop of a semi-circle. Curved triangles, painted red, along top of headdress, in front of the scallops. Curvilinear and stylized linear motifs painted across all of headdress in white and dark green. Red horn-like shapes painted on either side of headdress. Beak mouth is wide open, with tongue sticking out. Mouth is painted red, with small pointed teeth along the top and bottom edges. Two fang-like teeth on either side of mouth. Outer rim of mouth painted black with white lines throughout. Similar designs along sides of the mask. Eyes are painted yellow, orange and red, and are rimmed in red. Outer ears are painted dark green, inner ears painted pink and trimmed in red. Garuda is wearing red triangular earrings, with linear and circular designs painted in white on them. Both ears are attached to the mask with plant fibre ties. Mask has holes for eyes and mouth. Piece of skin(?) nailed to top of mask, on back, with a hole in it, for hanging. Ink inscription inside of mask.

Narrative

Purchased in the 1970s by a friend of the donor, who was a representative of the Canadian government posted in Singapore. Thought to have been carved by either Ida Bagus Ngurah or his son, Ida Bagus Gelodog.
