Description

Fragment of a woman's two-panel head cloth. Textile is irregularly shaped and cream coloured. Concentric diamond pattern, done in dense gauze weave, across entire surface. Loose gauze weave throughout the negative space. Fragment is stitched to grey coloured fabric, secured to off-white matboard.

Specific Techniques

Done in gauze weave. 1/1 plain gauze weave in alternate alignment with gauze crosses omitted to make the pattern. Cotton yarns are highly twisted.

Narrative

Collected in Peru before the 1970s by Ina VanStan, a Professor of Textiles and Clothing at the Florida State College for Women (Florida State University) from the 1940s to c. 1966. VanStan later gifted her collection to the donor. A large amount of the donation was used for teaching at the University of Alberta while others were mainly small study fragments.
