Description

Fragment of a woman's two-panel head cloth. Textile is irregularly shaped and dyed dark blue-grey. Done in dense gauze weave, shaped like diamonds. Plain horizontal line through centre, marking the two panels. Fragment is stitched to grey coloured fabric, secured to off-white matboard.

Specific Techniques

Done in gauze weave. Complex 2/2 gauze crosses in alternate alignment with 1/1 gauze crosses in alternate rows.

Narrative

Collected in Peru before the 1970s by Ina VanStan, a Professor of Textiles and Clothing at the Florida State College for Women (Florida State University) from the 1940s to c. 1966. VanStan later gifted her collection to the donor. A large amount of the donation was used for teaching at the University of Alberta while others were mainly small study fragments.
