Fragment: Headdress Item Number: 3263/83 a-e from the MOA: University of British Columbia
Fragments from a headdress. Consists of feather plume (part a) and reed shards (parts b-e). Shards are likely from the headdress structure. All reeds have slightly curved interiors and are brown-orange in colour. Plume made up of long white, purple and green feathers. Majority of feather quills are wrapped in beige thread. Ends of quills twined together.
Pieced feather quills held together by cotton yarns. At the base, the sections are joined together with twining into a spiralling package.
Collected in Peru before the 1970s by Ina VanStan, a Professor of Textiles and Clothing at the Florida State College for Women (Florida State University) from the 1940s to c. 1966. VanStan later gifted her collection to the donor. A large amount of the donation was used for teaching at the University of Alberta while others were mainly small study fragments.
