Description

Reproduction of an Edo ivory cup, made as a ceramic cup. Incised line patterns around sides of upper bowl; the cup is upheld by four human figures. Tiny holes on the inside surface of the cup were made to replicate the look of ivory.

History Of Use

Ceramic reproduction. The original carved of ivory is said to be in the "American Museum"(?) The original would have been for ceremonial use, with the figures representing ancestors.

Narrative

Sold to MOA as a contemporary reproduction; purchased from a Vancouver store that only sold reproductions. It is unrecorded as to whether the reproductions were made in Africa or North America, etc.
