Mate Straw Item Number: 3482/11 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Short, stainless steel straw (bombilla) for mate. It has a flat rectangle-like top, that tapers downward slightly. Bottom edge of top is bordered with a raised band, with various shapes impressed into it. Impressions give band a rough appearance. Beyond band is an undecorated stem, that is bent at an angle towards the top. Bottom of straw is capped with a corkscrew-like attachment, allowing mate to enter stem. Corkscrew has a flat, sealed base.

History Of Use

Yerba mate is a traditional South American caffeine-rich infused drink, made by soaking dried leaves of the holly species Ilex paraguariensis in hot water. Traditionally served in a calabash gourd container with a silver straw (bombilla) which serves as both a straw and a sieve.
