Gong Item Number: 3489/4 from the MOA: University of British Columbia
Hollow brass, silver coloured, gong with open base. Top has circular knob in centre, with surrounding area slightly sunken. Knob has green markings on top. Sides of gong slope inwards. Two holes drilled along top side with blue-green nylon(?) cord strung through them. Knot tied towards top of cord, for hanging purposes.
The gong is an important musical instrument for a number of groups in northern Borneo. It is played during many festivities, as well as occasions such as weddings and funerals.
Acquired by the donor in 1976-1978, when he lived and worked in Sabah, on the island of Borneo, as a volunteer with CUSO International.
