Description

Woven conical hat with tiered, rod brim. Bottom rods are naturally coloured, top rod is painted red. Hat is done in three sections with vertical bands of geometric patterns in their centres. Section backgrounds are naturally coloured. Bands have a concentric diamond near the top, and chevron patterns above and below it. Three vertical lines run through the geometric patterns. Lines are done in red, diamonds and chevrons done in black. Sections are bordered by rods, covered in coils of red and dark brown plant fibre. Coiled materials extend upward, over tip of hat, to create a three-arched loop. Tip of hat is red and black.

Narrative

Acquired by the donor in 1976-1978, when he lived and worked in Sabah, on the island of Borneo, as a volunteer with CUSO International.
