Gong Beater Item Number: 3489/29 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Wooden gong beater with a flat back and curved front. Head of beater has a rounded top edge and rectangular body. It then tapers into a cylindrical handle. Front is naturally coloured, back has darkened to a brown-black. In the centre back, where the head meets the handle, is a large piece of bees wax(?).

Narrative

Acquired by the donor in 1976-1978, when he lived and worked in Sabah, on the island of Borneo, as a volunteer with CUSO International. Made for him by local friends so that they could play the gongs (3489/1-5).
