Description

Shiwan style pottery figure of the goddess Guanyin, the Buddhist bodhisattva of mercy in female form wearing long flowing priestess robes, glazed in celadon. She is standing and wearing a long, full light blue hooded robe, holding a baby boy in her left arm. She wears a golden brown headdress, with green gems, and a matching necklace. Figure is hollow. Interior has maker’s seal, impressed signature, and is signed by the artist.

History Of Use

Shiwan ware (石灣窯)is a type of pottery from the Shiwanzen Subdistrict (石灣鎮街道) of the city of Foshan, near Guangzhou, Guangdong (广东省), China. 石灣 (Shiwan) is also sometimes transliterated as Shekwan.

Narrative

Purchased by the donor in 1981 at an exhibition of Shiwan pottery in Hong Kong.
