Tile Item Number: 3470/3 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Square ceramic tile with pomegranate motif carved in relief across front. Surface is glazed. Background is painted black, with a green tint. Three large pomegranates are growing from curving branches, that extend from top edge of tile. Leaves and offshoots, from same branches, decorate rest of surface. All are coloured dark green. White marks throughout design, highlighting veins in leaves and stem remnants on pomegranates. Five vertical ridges on back of tile. Manufacturer’s mark, Maw & Co., stamped between ridges.

Specific Techniques

Tile was manufactured by dust-pressing, a technique that uses clay milled to a fine powder with low moisture content, then pressed in a die with the relief pattern at high pressure.
