Description

Bronze sculpture of a water buffalo. Head is circular, tapering to a long flat snout. Raised swirls, imitating eyes, on either side of face. Horns curl under buffalo’s head and ears are pointed back at an angle. Line of concentric circles, done in low relief, decorate entire back of buffalo. Below, on either side of the body, are rows of concentric semi-circles; triangle patterns formed in the negative space. Buffalo’s legs are straight and have points on the front and back. Undecorated tail hangs from back, between hind legs, with a slight curve at the end.

History Of Use

Bastar is a region famous for different kinds of artistic figures, most commonly their copper and brass figurines. These pieces are ornately carved with traditional tribal motifs like paisley designs and alternating line designs.
