Description

Carved stone figure in crouching position. Figure has bulging eyes in deep sockets; nose is long with wide nostrils, overtop protruding smiling lips. Raised ridges, consisting of rounded squares, carved along back of head and neck, imitating hair(?). Arms are raised, with hands covering ears; knees spaced apart. Buttocks and shoulder blades carved in relief.

History Of Use

Nomoli figures are placed near homes and in crop fields as a form of protection, in the belief that the nomoli will bring good health and good harvests.

Narrative

The donor taught in a rural school in Tobli, eastern Liberia, from 1965 to 1967.
