Description

Large wooden bowl with a scalloped rim and raised foot. Exterior body of bowl is covered in carved decorations; interior is plain. Design consists of ovals with semi-circles in between them; semi-circles are along the top and bottom edges of the bowl. Both shapes alternate between two patterns. The first oval design is a column of square-based triangles trimmed with curved lines; second is filled with raised diamonds and has a plain line down the centre. The first semi-circle design is raised diamonds in the middle and diagonal lines along the sides; second has a leaf-like design, with diagonal lines extending from a straight central line. Base of foot is concave. Braided tie strung through top edge of bowl, for hanging purposes.

Narrative

The donor taught in a rural school in Tobli, eastern Liberia, from 1965 to 1967.
