Description

Stoneware figure of a small upright seal. Face consists of incised circular eyes and a mouth. Foreflippers are wrapped around front of body. Figure is solid and base is unglazed; rest of seal is red-orange with dark yellow undertones and dark brown speckles throughout. Unsigned.

Narrative

Figure was made while Makituk was a student at the Kootenay School of Art in Nelson, BC in the late 1960s; she was studying with Walter Dexter. It was acquired directly from the artist by the donor's family, who moved to Nelson in 1968.
