Description

Stoneware figure of a standing man; arms at sides, hands curved around stomach. Face consists of incised eyes, a pointed nose and open mouth; moustache, eyebrows and pupils are painted on. Man has dark brown bangs and side burns; incised lines throughout hair. Figure is wearing a hooded parka, short pants, mittens and tall boots. Parka and pants are dark blue; boots and mittens are dark brown. Parka cuffs and hood opening are trimmed with light grey and dark pink; bottom of parka trimmed in dark pink with yellow spots. Figure is hollow; face and base are unglazed. Unsigned.

Narrative

Figure was made while Makituk was a student at the Kootenay School of Art in Nelson, BC in the late 1960s; she was studying with Walter Dexter. It was acquired directly from the artist by the donor's family, who moved to Nelson in 1968.
