Description

Large, heavy silver hook earring. Suspended from circular pendant are a series of layered chains, ending in gold-coloured circles. Large hollow circle hangs directly underneath pendant; top part made up of openwork, bottom is closed and undecorated. Additional layered chains suspended from hollow circle; semi-circle and teardrop-shaped charms hang around circumference of circle. Main pendant and all charms have raised flower-like motifs across them. Red glass(?) beads decorate centres of circular pendant, and teardrop and semi-circle charms on front of earring; beads on pendant and semi-circle have moon and star designs incised on them.

Narrative

The donor's parents lived in Saudi Arabia from 1982-1992, while her father was working there. The items (3553/1-4) are thought to have been purchased at one of the local markets, possibly in the old town of Yanbu, as they were living in the new town of Yanbu at the time; or possibly in Riyadh.
