Bag Item Number: 3486/67 from the MOA: University of British Columbia
A looped bag (bolsa or shicra).
Different types of Andean bags (bolsas, generic term, Spanish) have different names and characteristics.
Purchased by donor in La Paz in 1983 in a street market.
The flat bag is constructed in simple looping with an element that is spun and plied with the fingers and hands. The element is constructed a few inches at a time during looping, which is the reason that there are not knotted joins in the looping element. The flat bag is worked in spiraling rows starting at the bottom.
