Description

Woven chunchu (jungle headdress) band (jakima) finished on one end with braids that are sewn together. The central design features a loraypu (leaf pattern) motif with mirrored repeating red leaf shapes against a white background, separated by a thin contrasting band along the horizontal centre in brown with light orangish-brown diamonds. A thin horizontal stripe in light brown and dark brown form the top and bottom borders.

History Of Use

Bands are used in various ways as fasteners or adornments in the highlands of Peru and Bolivia. Jakima is the name given to the bands on which young weavers learn the basic patterns (pallay), which are repeated or combined into the larger pallay that adorn their textiles.

Made, along with 3486/74-90, by young weavers from Chinchero; both boys and girls.
