Band Item Number: 3486/76 from the MOA: University of British Columbia
Thin woven band (jakima) finished on one end with a small looped fringe. The sikipunakuj (backside-to-backside) ch’uro (snail) motif of alternating deep red and cobalt blue triangular shapes decorated with dots is repeated across the band. The motif is contained in a thin white and black border.
Bands are used in various ways as fasteners or adornments in the highlands of Peru and Bolivia. Jakima is the name given to the bands on which young weavers learn the basic patterns (pallay), which are repeated or combined into the larger pallay that adorn their textiles.
Done in a complementary warp weave.
Made, along with 3486/73-75 and 77-90, by young weavers from Chinchero; both boys and girls.
