Description

Oval basket with handle. Flat oval base with high raised edges made of coiled flexible sticks(?) bound together with vertical plant fibre stitching. Overall repeating diamond pattern on both exterior and interior worked in darker colours. Attached rounded handle is composed of four firm sticks(?) stitched together, with the outer two pieces plaited. The handle is stitched to the interior of the basket's raised edges at centre.

Narrative

Collected by the donor in 1976-1980, when she and her husband were living in Bougainville, where her husband worked as a mining engineer; some of the pieces were gifted to them. This basket was made for her to carry her infant son.
