Calligraphy Item Number: 3601/2 from the MOA: University of British Columbia
Calligraphic work on paper; done in horizontal orientation. Design consists of black characters tightly interwoven at different angles across white surface; black diamonds and thin lines throughout. Undecorated border along all sides. Inscriptions written in bottom left corner on front and across back of paper; manufacturer's mark blind-embossed in bottom right.
These works were given as a gift to the donor's mother, Amina Mirza, in Lahore in 2017, by the artist. The artist states: "A contemporary Arabic calligraphic style, which I have been practicing for many years and have been using it throughout my work, slowly improving it and modifying along the way. It borrows heavily from classic Thuluth."
Qalam's work is done free-hand, on a pencil grid.
