Axe Head Item Number: C350 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Blue-grey stone axe head. Triangular in shape with rounded corners and tapered at edges.

Narrative

This may be one of the stone axes of which Burnett wrote that an individual from 'Kolambangra' had discovered a cache of them, but when he took one home he fell ill and the villagers concluded that the axe was the cause, so they had removed the cache to an uninhabited island. Burnett persuaded someone to take him there, where he found twenty-three stone axes. He wrote, "As he did not appear to have any objections to them being appropriated by me, I annexed the whole lot."
