Basket Item Number: 2022.O.007:4 from the Sto:lo Research & Resource Management Centre

Description

Medium sized picnic style cedar slat basket with a hinged lid. The slats are so fine, they almost look like cedar coil rounds near the top. There are two handles attached with strips of leather. The lid is attached with two strips of leather as a hinge. There also is a leather tie to close the basket, but the bottom strap has broken off. There is black dyed cedar, red cherry bark, and wild grass decorations on the sides and lid. The two wide sides each have two black and red diamonds. All four sides have black and yellow geometric strips. The lid is damaged and the decorations are flaking off. There is a black strip down the center and two arrows pointing in.

Provenance

Basket was bought by the grandmother of the donor (Myrtle Ferguson) in Chilliwack in the 1930's from a lady going door to door. They lived on Hazel street and also at Cultus lake during the 1930's.
