Description

Coiled cedar root basket with attached lid. Simple interlocking coiled work (with bifurcated stitches) and parallel slat base and watch-spring lid construction. Basket also has overcast rims and a rawhide thong. The lid is decorated with six rectangles of cat-tail grass, which are outlined alternatively in black or red cherry bark. The sides have four vertical bands of white grass edged with black or red, the resulting rectanglar shapes are joined together. Colour: tan.

History Of Use

It was previously thought that this basket was used to store tobacco and pipes, but Nlaka'pamux Elder Shirley Sterling suggests that this type of basket is used when fishing, usually trout.
