Description

Shield with coiled pieces of cane-like grass bound with horizontal lashings. Both ends come to a point, and one end is slightly narrower than the other. There are geometric designs in black on the front and back of the shield. There is a handle attached to the reverse side of the shield.

Narrative

Burnett was likely referring to this shield (as well as C359 and Ig414) when he wrote about curio-collecting on New Georgia. "I secured a large number of finely carved spears, clubs, and grotesque canoe gods, inlaid with pearl shell, also several of the beautifully-made New Georgia shields ...."
