Description

Woven basket with a flat, rectangular bottom and flaring sides. Simple coiled work (bifurcated stitches); parallel splint base construction changing to watch-spring construction near edge; partial imbrication. Both sides are decorated differently; 1) series of large vertically connected diamonds shapes flanked by smaller diamonds. 2) stylized floral patterns flanking two strips of "arrowheads" separated by unimbricated stitches. Colours: red, black, tan.

History Of Use

According to Sto:lo basket makers this basket was a work basket. These types of baskets often have loops on the sides on which to fasten pack straps for carrying.

Iconographic Meaning

This basket has a design that has several different interpretations. Sto:lo basket makers suggested that it could represent a tree, a feather or a ladder.
