Description

Hand basket built with simple coiled work (bifurcated stitches), a parallel slat base construction, over handles connected to the basket by loops, and a cross-stitched rim. Wide chevron design in checkered off-white bulrush, black and red. Same colour sequence on bottom rim.

Iconographic Meaning

According to the original collector's records this basket features a flying bird design. However, vertical zigzags are often referred to as snake trails or lightning. Single chevron-shaped designs are more commonly associated with flying birds or geese.
