Description

Flat, oval shell disc that has a bilaterally symmetrical design on both sides. One side has a worn frigate bird pattern emphasized with black pigment. There are two birds with both heads of which are facing outward and downward. In between the birds, there is a u shape with a top-hat-like arch below. Above, there are two pairs of tapering ovals. Bordered by a zig zag line. The other side has a faint pattern that is similar.

Narrative

According to Burnett, he found this piece, along with other shell ornaments etc., while exploring coral cliffs on the coast, near the Morovo Lagoon, with Mr. Bennett. He said there were many caves that had been converted to 'tambo' shrines, where he found "... many propitiatory offerings..." and was able "... to add to my curio collection a specimen of carved shell work ..."
