Description
Wooden mat creaser with polished surface. Bird-shaped with projections, or heads, at each end. The wood is a dark reddish brown colour with a few black patches. A groove is present on the vental surface. One face or side of the creaser is slightly convex, while the other is flat or slightly concave in places. The slightly convex face has several cut marks which cross each other near the proximal edge, near the midline.
History Of Use
This object was used for creasing cat-tail or tule reed mats in combination with a mat needle. The mat needle would be inserted through the leaves of the cat-tail, and the grooved portion of the mat creaser would be run across the surface to create a crease in the mat that would prevent it from splitting later when it was sewn with cordage.
