Description

Small, basketry baby carrier, or cradle. Simple interlocking coiled work (bifurcated stitches) with slat base construction and overcast rim, beading and imbrication, narrow slit on end. Partial beading and imbrication, discrete vertical panels and continuous horizontal pattern. Sides: series of vertical panels in red/white alternating with black/white in various checker patterns (i.e. Has varying nos. Of stitches) with chevron beaded band at top rim; totally imbricated in cat-tail grass with some sections in red and black cherry bark.

History Of Use

Sto:lo basket maker and weaver Wendy Ritchie suggests this cradle would have been made for a highly treasured daughter or granddaughter, since it is very precise, detailed work.

Iconographic Meaning

The zigzag design on the top of this cradle is sometimes referred to a snake trails. The other designs are similar to the cluster of flies pattern, given their larger size they may represent butterflies or bees.
