Basketry Tray Item Number: A8213 from the MOA: University of British Columbia
Circular tan cedar root tray with simple coiled work (bifurcated stitches), watch-spring base construction, and partial imbrication. Five central rows alternate in red cherry bark and grass. Four vertical stripes composed of the letters "N" in red and "M" in black split the design field into four. Staggered between, there are y-like shapes in black, red and white, with alternating red and black arrowhead shapes around the inner rim and outer edge.
Sto:lo basket maker Frieda George thought that this tray might have been used in church services.
The triangular elements with the crosses on the top may represent a church according to Nlaka'pamux basket maker Minnie Peters and Sto:lo basket makers Elizabeth Herrling and her granddaughter Frieda George. Frieda suggests that the letters may indicate what church this tray is from.
