Description

Clown-face mask with oval shaped head with two protruding cylindrical eyes and a curved nose. Teeth carved in mouth, chin consists of separate piece. Painted in colours of red, white and blue.

History Of Use

Used in cleansing ceremonies: during marriage, after death, and the bestowing of a name.

Iconographic Meaning

This mask represents a type of Clown Mask, which Suttles notes was in use in the Halkomelem area - specifically at Musqueam and Cowichan. This mask is quite anthropomorphic and lacks the animal finials seen on the other types of Sxwayxwey.
