Description

A red and brown clay bowl with two horizontal bands of bosses circling the rim of the bowl linked by a triangular toothed pattern with grooved dots in the areas between the lines. Rounded bottom.

Specific Techniques

According to Burnett, "potters in Fiji are invariably women who work without a wheel forming the vessels by skill of hand and eye, using no tools but flat smooth stones and a wooden beater. The glaze is given with the gum of the Dakua (Kauri) tree, and the red colour by a dye obtained from mangrove bark, both applied while the vessel is still hot. The potters are termed 'dau tuli kuro'...".
