Sled Item Number: A4380 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Toboggan style sled made from two planks of wood. The boards are joined together with four cross-supports, evenly spaced, with a wider piece incised with five grooves at the top, front end. Twine is threaded along the sides and two leather straps are attached to the front end at the ends of one cross-support.

Narrative

Uncertain cultural origin. "Sardis" (where Raley resided while principal of the Coqueleetza school), was penciled on the base by someone. However Raley's catalogue only lists one sled, which was a dog sled from Stuart Lake (near Fort St. James in northern BC). The manufacture of this tobaggan is very similar in style to Euro-Canadian models. It is not made in the style of a traditional northern dog sled.
