Spirit Dance Hair Ornament Item Number: A6885 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Ornament consisting of a carved wooden peg, beads placed on a metal pin, and two cross-bars of bone to which feathers are fastened with thread. Sequins are sewn to one side of each feather. The wooden beads are black, red, white and green in colour.

Narrative

This ornament was collected from the Koksilah reserve near Duncan, BC. According to the collector, "it is a common type in use in many of the spirit dances of the winter season among many tribes of Vancouver Island. Some are more elaborate according to the skill of the maker or the amount of money available to pay a professional to make one."
