Description

Dark brown carved wooden stool with a seat that curves upwards at the ends. Central column pierced with square holes, outer supports have scalloped edges. Flat, rectangular base.

History Of Use

Seat for a person of authority. Similar but cruder stools are also in domestic use. The hole in the bottom is for storing valuables. B.V. Asihbme in "African Art" says this style is called "Mmadu" and the style indicates it for use by a woman of authority (chief's mother or sister).
