Jacket3464/1

Handmade, indigo dyed jacket. The exterior is black, the interior is lined with dark blue cloth. Jacket has a front centre opening, with finely woven bands attached to either side. Bands have a central design of curved lines on a solid background, trimmed by plain and dotted lines. Designs are done in different shades of purple. Identically coloured bands are along the halfway point of the sleeves. Bands have alternating, diagonal rows of swastikas and meander-like designs. They are framed with straight lines and rhombuses. Sides of bands, closest to the cuffs, are trimmed with white and dark brown stitches. Identical stitching along shoulders. Back of jacket has a central panel of vertical stripes, done in shades of blue and brown. Overtop, below the neckline, is an additional decorative panel made of tin embroidery, done in meander-like designs. Panel has long strands of fringe along the bottom edge. Front of jacket has a patch on one side, and another piece is inset around the neck.

Drum3149/5

Small drum. Sides constructed from tin-like metal formed into a low cylinder, covered with brown paper. Both ends of the cylinder are covered with stretched skin that is fastened with strips of sinew sewn through the edges, that then criss-cross around the cylinder. The drum's top surface has two threads in pink and blue across it, tied around small pieces of wood, and fastened to sinew on either side.

Pair of plain, round, tin metal earrings with metal hoops attached at tops and covered with material. Part a has leather covering the hoop, and part b has brown-yellow rubber covering the hoop. The small groove in each earring is filled with dirt in some areas.

Water Puppet3127/7

Water puppet (mua roi nuoc) of Ky Lan unicorn (or lion) character. Puppet is carved from wood with a large head painted gold, a wide nose, and a fierce moveable mouth barring white teeth. Eyes protrude from a scowling brow in front of a curling mane. Eyebrows are fan shaped and multicoloured, attached to the face by fishing line. The midsection is made of plastic tubing to enable movement, and covered by red cotton fabric. The rump of the animal is wood, with moveable yellow legs to each side and a raised tail of green and red curls at centre back. Tin is attached to the interior edges of the head and rump where they meet the red cotton midsection.

Basket3074/1

Tall, round basket has a willow root under-cage, with wrapped root. Base contains a central punt. Horizontal sections of root are dyed slightly darker to make a ringed pattern. Remnants of red dye can be seen in a few areas. From both top rim and 6cm from bottom hang fringes of small, conical, tin noisemakers attached to short lengths of hide.

Rattle3041/6

Rattle made of six cones of tin attached to a wooden handle. The cones consist of different sizes, three wide and long, and three shorter and smaller in diameter. All are crimped at the handle, where they fit into a metal ring that joins them to the handle. Each cone widens toward the base. The larger three contain a wire hung with a metal nut as a clapper. The cones are decorated with circle and line motifs pressed into the tin. The wooden handle has an engraved line that spirals from end to end.

Binocular Glasses3000/5

Pair of metal binoculars. Eye piece assembly is made of brass, with a black patina. Below it at centre sits a rigged focussing knob. The barrels are covered in a hard black leather and flare slightly toward the objective lenses, which are lined with moveable tin tubes that have a pattern of incised, encircling lines.

Travel Chest3000/1 a-c

Large rectangular trunk with a high convex lid, reinforced by perpendicular horizontal wooden slats (two on the body and five on the lid) with decorative metal slat-clamps at the corners. Base corner clamps include small metal wheels. Corner edges are reinforced with tin strips, with two thinner pieces decorating the front and a tin lip edging the lid. All are attached by rivets. Leather handles were once attached to short sides, with one now missing and the other damaged. Heavy paper lines the outer walls, and has decorative scored and painted ‘x’ and diamond shapes on the front of body and lid. Trunk is closed by two latches at front centre with a lock between, and a drawbolt to each side. At back are three metal hinges. Decorative metal corner bumps are attached at lid’s top corners with a small metal handle at front centre. Interior of trunk lined in grey paper. Part b is a piece of interior luggage that sits high in the trunk on wooden slats. It is divided into three compartments, all with top lifting lids. Made of wood, the piece is covered in grey paper on sides, while lids are decorated in adhesive paper in white and blue lines, borders in red, blue and yellow, and two images at centre of lids showing people, foliage, landscapes and decorative patterning. Attached to the interior lid of the trunk are similar lidded compartments decorated in the same motifs that nestle together with part b in a compact fit. Part c is a rectangular paper luggage tag.

Green painted metal carnival mask with protruding angular nose and eye and mouth openings. There are black lines painted around the eyes, as well as black eyebrows, moustache, small pointed beard below the mouth opening, a hair line along the top edge of the mask, and a cross on the forehead. There is one hole in the centre top of the mask, and one on each side.

Black painted metal carnival mask with two red horns extending up from the forehead, a large protruding angular nose and openings for the eyes and mouth. A red tongue protrudes from the bottom of the mouth opening. Red oblong shapes are painted around the eyes, and the upper nose and area between the base of the horns is also red. The tips of the horns are black, and there are four white teeth painted above the mouth opening. There is one hole in the centre top of the mask, and one on each side.
