Baby CarrierA6301 a-c

Wooden cradle, or baby carrier, in three pieces. Part (a) is the bottom and the side, (b) is the other side, and (c) is the bottom end. The main part is loosely held together with nails; the other two parts have nails protruding along the side (part b) or bottom (part c).

Part (a) Rectangular coiled storage basket (bifurcated stitches) with lid, part (b). Parallel base construction and elongated watch-spring coiled lid construction. Fully imbricated with cat-tail grass (?) and vertical zig-zag rows alternating in red and dark cherry bark. Two coil handles over rawhide on each short side. Basket has inner and outer rim. Row of solid cherry bark imbrication at outer rim and at base. Lid also fully imbricated with cat-tail grass(?) and has two continuous horizontal zig-zag rows of dark cherry bark near rim and red cherry bark above. Rectangular outlines in dark cherry bark around center, with red cherry bark filled in. Coil handle is missing at center.

Large wooden carving of the upper torso of a male angel, holding a bowl. Figure is round at its base (waist), dressed in a blue-grey robe, holding a black bowl with one hand. The other hand is raised, palm out, in benediction. A pair of wings (parts b,c) with the carved feather side painted grey and the other side white with grey painted feathering, attach to the back with pegs.

Northern style bentwood box, bent with the outside corners opened. Nails used on one corner and to attach bottom to sides. Holes bored in ends for handles. Three sides have incised rectangle. Border around rectangle is carved with vertical lines. Inside rectangles are carved horizontal lines. Lid, part (part b) has upstanding ridge on one side.

Wooden, storage chest (parts a-b) with a brown wood frame bottom, metal side handles and a flat wood lie (part b). The box (part a) is painted on three sides with a white background and Northwest Coast stylized figures in black, green, grey and red. The front design depicts a front facing whale with its body split to either side, its dorsal fin on top and its tail fin at the bottom. The ends each have a whale in profile.

Bentwood BoxA8539 a-b

Bentwood box with painted designs in black and red; with a lid (part b) with edges that bevel inwards towards the base. The main decoration fills each of two opposite sides with a bilaterally symmetrical design. The other two sides each have a less elaborate abstract design formed by an ovoid with two u-forms centred on each panel, also in black and red. The side joint and bottom are nailed.
