Coat1185/1

Maroon velvet surcoat heavily ornamented with gold. The woman’s coat has a fitted bodice and full, calf-length skirt. The bodice and skirt are almost entirely covered with scrollwork embroidery, worked with metallic gold cord and metallic gold thread, except for a plain panel on each side of the bodice front and at the centre of the bodice back. The bodice is sleeveless in the front; there are long, flat panels that suggest sleeves, attached at the shoulders and back arms; these are worn crossed and fastened with hook and eye at the centre back below the waist. The edges of the bodice meet at centre front; although there are eight decorative buttons on each side of the centre front opening of the bodice, there is no provision for fastening. Buttons are made of metallic gold thread wrapped around a wooden core, trimmed with small coral beads. Smaller buttons at the bottom edge of "sleeves." There are pockets on each side of the skirt, just below the waist. All edges are bound with patterned silver ribbon and five rows of heavy gold cord. The garment, which is very stiff and heavy, is entirely interlined with animal skin, which supports the weight of the metallic embroidery. Bodice and skirt are lined with orange cotton damask; sleeves are lined with striped black, white and yellow cotton broadcloth.

Seat Cover1370/3

A flat, embroidered seat cover. It appears to be shaped to fit a large bicycle seat. It is constructed from blue cotton textile (that has faded to a blue gray colour on the front side of the object), which is profusely embroidered in chain stitch with bright orange and mustard yellow silk or rayon floss, using a meandering pattern, along with paisley motifs and designs that perhaps represent peacocks. A small hooked sun disc motif, enclosed in a circle, appears in the centre, and along the perimeter of the design field are several small discs made from yellow, green and white glass beads. Some gold metallic braid is incorporated into the design. The embroidered textile is edged with a dense fringe made from twisted dark red fibre (faded) and white glass beads, and a ruffle made from dark green synthetic knitted textile. The embroidery is backed with red cotton textile.

Textile1043/1

Square embroidered domestic textile, with large naturalistic floral designs stitched with silk floss in many colours on red cotton fabric. There is a large circular floral pattern in the centre and an arrangement of flowers, leaves and stems in each corner of the square. A border of meandering stems, leaves and flowers forms a frame around the outside edges of the square. The background textile was pieced together from narrow strips before the embroidered patterns were worked. The edges are, for the most part, unfinished, although needle marks along some edges indicate that an edging, such as braid or fringe, may once have been in place.
