Feast DishA6936

Long, wooden feast dish carved in the shape of an animal, with a deep, oval shaped bowl in the middle. The tail is paddle shaped and curves downward to join the body; it’s legs are carved in relief against the body, the feet support the bowl. An abstract design is painted on the tail. The exterior rim of the dish is painted with a continuous pattern of alternating opposing pairs of white semicircles with inset green triangles. Both sides of the object are painted with a large human face with a downturned mouth - the face is outlined in blue on a white background. Has been badly broken, and repaired.

A container made from a dark brown gourd shaped like a sphere, from which the top one-third has been cut away. A hole is bored near the rim for insertion of a cord of braided root(?) 21.5 cm. long. The main design consists of an incised band around the rim consisting of a single line with a herringbone pattern.

Tobacco ContainerNi54 a-e

Five small rounded gourds joined together with lengths of twisted palm fibre(?), cord and yarn. Each gourd is pierced at sides near top, cord is inserted and knotted, gourd with red yarn passes through without being knotted. Each gourd has small round hole at top, and two have stoppers (parts a and d). Two undecorated gourds (parts d and e), while remaining three have external decorations: 1) deer skin, some hair remains (part a); 2) grid pattern created by wrapping orange- pink, blue, yellow and red yarn horizontally and vertically (part b); 3) grey- brown cloth with red cross stitching in eight pointed star, top and sides sewn with blue yarn, tassels at each lower corner (part c).

Votive BowlNi27 a-f

Hollowed gourd bowl covered on exterior with beeswax and inlaid with glass beads in a design consisting of white deer with cross above centre of body, red and black undulating line at centre of body, outlined in black. Two red and yellow figures both with arms outstretched, one is seated on a white and black chair the other is standing. Two u-shaped bases have double crosses above with blue ground, and yellow rim. Black divided circle on base has green and white triangular shaped wedges. Bowl contains three sticks inserted into beeswax. Two sticks are painted in blue and red bands, notched at upper end. Centre stick wrapped in red, blue, and pink yarn. Diminutive representations attached to each stick with braided or wrapped yarn, stick on left has a guitar, two bows, god's eye, paper sandal. Centre stick has drum, bow, arrow, shield, and feathers. Stick on right has violin, bow, god's eye and a paper sandal.

Broad rounded three-legged drum has hide stretched and pegged around top. Long strip of twisted hide connects pegs and is wrapped once around each peg. At upper rim, held by twisted hide are three bamboo sticks with spiral painted notched ends, yarn wrappings around shaft have feathers, miniature bow, and animal snare. Burnt hole on either side and burnt line figures around sides include the following: two plants, snake, reptile, fire ?, and deer.

Hollow sheet bronze figure, filled with clay(?), base closed with sheet of same metal fastened with tabs and sealed clay. Male figure is seated cross-legged on double lotus base, hands in lap, palms up, right hand over left with thumbs touching; smiling with eyes open. Yellow-brown patina; face, feet hands and elaborate headdress are gilded. Headdress, earrings and draperies are from separate pieces of bronze stapled to figure. Back of headdress is painted red and blue; red and green paint in circles represent jewels. One drapery is detached; headdress is bent.

Stringed Musical InstrumentAf500 a-b

Gourd harp-like instrument. Forked piece of branch (part b), with a straight section of equal length to that of the forks, and with a stick going across the top creating a triangular frame. One side has nine holes pierced through by burning. Five grass strings are tied into five of them and go to the opposite side and wind around the stick. Piece of cord around unpierced end. Separated from frame is half of a brown-yellow gourd (part a), of which the top centre has four pierced holes on it with cracks around them, and grass going through two holes at the base of the gourd.

Hollowed log with a carved face projecting at each end. The snout of the smaller animal head is broken off; the longer head is human upturned, flat and smiling. The hollow is uneven, bulging on one side, and split at the top.

Cattle bell made from a small whole tortoise shell that has two wooden clappers attached with rawhide thongs through two holes in the upper shell. Twelve complete geometric shape blocks on the top shell with an entire bottom shell as well. Geometric shape blocks have orange-brown middles and are black on the outside with contour lines.
