Cantonese Opera JacketN1.642

Purple jacket with appliqué circles on the centre front and back. The jacket has a rounded neck, wide sleeves and a centre opening with brass frog closures. There are slits in the sides and back. The circles have four toed dragon motifs in silver, pink and purple on a turquoise ground. There are mirrors, tin reflectors, green glass eyes and white fur within the circles. There is black and gold trim around the edges of the sleeves and bottom hem. The inside lining is yellow linen.

Cantonese Opera JacketN1.640 a

Yellow jacket (part a) with embroidery, slender cuffed sleeves and side opening with frog closures and metal snap fasteners. The collar, side opening, sleeves and hem have a green lotus motif and black meander border. The collar is stiffened with paper and finished with a green ribbon. The inside lining is ecru cotton.

Two deities, one mounted on an elephant (part a), the other on a bear (part b). One holds hands together in prayer (part a), the other holds religious tokens (part b). Both wear "flying scarves" added after casting. These figures most likely represent Buddhist "Bodhisattvas" or devotees of Buddha who have attained Buddhahood, yet choose to remain on earth and serve.
